Lost season 5 episode guide: episode 5.10 "He's Our You"
Summary:
Sayid is still cooling his heels in the Dharmaville jail and Sheriff LaFleur (a.k.a. Sawyer) is failing in his attempts to convince Dharma leader Horace to spring him loose.
Instead, the Dharmaites take Sayid to their interrogator, Oldham, who ties Sayid to a tree, loads him up with acid (the CIA did experiments using LSD as a truth drug back in the 1950s or 60s, y'know) and attempts to question him. Sayid, completely loaded, starts spouting off all he knows about Dharma stations and the like. The thing is, though, none of those stations have been built yet. The Dharma folks are a little freaked out. But when Sayid says that he's from "the future" they think that maybe he's just had a little too much acid.
Horace and the other Dharma leaders then retreat back to his cabin where they decide to vote Sayid off the island. Permanently. He's going to be executed and there's not a danged thing Sawyer can do to help.
No fear, though, creepy young Benjamin Linus is on the scene. While delivering another sandwich, he reveals to Sayid that he's been in contact with the Hostiles/Others. He wants to join them. He believes Sayid is an Other and wants to help him.
Meanwhile, in flashbacks, we learn more about Ilana, the woman who had Sayid handcuffed on the Ajira flight. Turns out she's a bounty hunter, evidently hired by the family of one of the Widmore associates Sayid assassinated at the grownup Ben's behest.
Back to the present (which, at this point is the 1970s), a flaming Dharma van goes crashing into one of the Initiative's buildings, distracting everyone from the jail, where Ben--they guy who evidently started the van on fire--lets Sayid out of his cell.
Ben and Sayid are escaping through the jungle when they are spotted by Jin. Jin wants to help Sayid, but says he must check with Sawyer. Before Jin can connect to Sawyer on the walkie, however, Sawyer clobbers him. Stealing Jin's gun he then proceeds to shoot young Ben right in the chest. This is really gonna mess with the timeline, man.
Questions/observations/speculation:
* If young Ben is dead, will this change the future?
* Will Ben survive somehow? Maybe Richard Alpert saves him.
* If Ben does live, does future Ben remember Sayid?
* Where will Sayid go now?
* Was Ilana really working for Widmore's people, or for Ben? I think Ben, as Ben didn't seem too terribly surprised to see Sayid on that Ajira plane.
* While Sayid is in jail, young Ben brings him the book "A Separate Reality," by 1960s/70s author Carlos Castenada, famed for his tomes about hallucinogenic insights, shamanism, etc. This is ahead of Sayid's Dharma-initiated acid trip--providing a hint at what was to come, I guess.
* Also while in jail, Sayid meets up with Ben's dad, Roger, who is a real jerk. This provides a little more insight into why the Others seemed so attractive to young Ben.
* Radzinsky threatens to alert "Ann Arbor" about the Sayid situation. The Initiative was created by University of Michigan researchers and, evidently, Horace is taking his orders from DeGroot, or whoever, back there. Will we ever get to meet these higher ups?
* Oldham is spinning Billie Holliday singing "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" on his Victrola, demonstrating that he has by far the best musical taste on the island.
* In the bar with Ilana, Sayid is drinking MacCutcheon whisky, which is Charles Widmore's drink of choice.

Lost season 5 episode guide: episode 5.9 "Namaste"
Summary:
In flashbacks, we see more of what happened to the Ajira flight--Namely pilot Frank manages to crash land it on the smaller, Hydra experimental island. On a runway. The same one we saw Sawyer and Kate helping to construct while prisoners of the Others?
Outside of the other pilot, most people seem to survive the crash. But Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer have disappeared, leaving just Sun, Frank and Ben on the smaller island. However, they soon make plans to head to the big island by outrigger. Ben knows where the boats are hidden. Before he gets paddling, though, Sun takes a paddle to him. To the back of his head, specifically, knocking him out cold. She and Frank then venture to the big island. When they arrive, however, the Dharma docks are in disarray (dig the alliteration) and the barracks are barren. Seemingly, anyhow. But then a light flicks on in one of the buildings and out steps...Christian Shepherd.
He's all alone there. All the windows have been boarded up. It's like a ghost town. Not even the Others are living there. Is this the far future? Anyhow, Sun says she's looking for her husband. Christian knows Jin's name and invited them into the building. He pulls a picture off the wall. It's from the 1970s.
"Here are your friends," Christian says. Hurley, Kate, Jack and the rest are depicted in a group shot of Dharma initiates. "You have a long journey ahead of you, I'm afraid," Christian tells Sun and Frank. And that's all we see of that storyline.
Meanwhile, back in the 70s, there's a new sheriff in town by the name of Sawyer. And he uses that post to smuggle new re-arrivals Jack, Kate and Hurley to the island into the Dharma fold by disguising them as new initiates. The cover story is that they've arrived by sub with a bunch of other people. They're given clothes, jobs and a place to live, no sweat.
The guy who is sweating, however, is Sayid. He's elsewhere on the island and is picked up by the Dharma-ites as a Hostile. Jin and Sawyer need to play along, and Sayid is locked up in the Dharma jail. Sawyer is trying to figure out a way to get him released. But, in the meantime, Sayid receives a visitor at his cell. It's a teenage Benjamin Linus.
Questions/observations/speculation:
* Was the Others' landing strip created for this purpose, or some other reason? Did Ben see this all coming? Was it planned?
* If past Ben met Sayid, does future Ben remember? What the heck is going on timeline-wise?
* Where's Locke? If he took an outrigger to the big island, does he end up in the same timeline as Sun and Frank?
* When are Sun and Frank? The future? What's happened to the Dharma settlement and the island? Is it inhabited outside of Christian Shepherd? How will they get back to the 70s?
* Why didn't Sun, Frank and Ben end up in the 70s? We know Ben probably didn't, because he's already on the island during that time frame, as the pre-teen who visits Sayid in Dharma jail. Do Sun and Frank also have a prior history on the island? Is Sun really the child of Pierre Chang?
* How is Sayid gonna get out of the hoosegow?
* What's gonna happen with the Jack-Sawyer-Kate-Juliet love quadrangle? Are they gonna find mutual peace and understanding? I don't think so.
* Amy reveals the name of her baby. It's Ethan. Evidently, the kid will grow up to be a creepy Oceanic-survivor-killing Other.
* Sawyer indicates that Faraday was with him and the rest in the 1970s, but not anymore? What happened to him?
* Jack is welcomed to the Dharma Initiative by the mysterious, one-armed Dr. Pierre Chang, familiar to us under various different names in the Dharma orientation videos. Does Chang realize Jack and the rest aren't who they seem?
* The Oceanic Dharma infiltrators know that Dharma settlers are eventually knocked off by the Others. Can they do anything to alter this future?
* The guy Jin confronts in the Flame Station is Radzinsky, a name we've heard in past seasons. Remember? Kelvin, the original man in the Hatch, told Desmond that Radzinsky went crazy and killed himself. Radzinsky is also the guy responsible for the map drawn on the Hatch's blast door.
* It looks like Radzinsky is building a model of the eventual Hatch.
* When Sun is in the Dharma barracks it looks as if there's a woman standing behind her. Maybe Christian isn't alone. Or maybe it's a production goof.
* Whose name did Ilana utter when Caesar awoke her on the plane? Sounded like "Tara" or "Sarah."

Lost season 5 episode guide: episode 5.8 "LaFleur"
Summary:
Through a series of back-and-forth flashbacks, we learn what happened to Sawyer, Juliette, Miles, Jin and Daniel once Locke left the island: A period of three years.
The group has transported back to 1974, and it's stuck there. Time has quit shifting. The headaches and nosebleeds have stopped. As Daniel says "The record has stopped skipping, but the needle's on the wrong song."
Making their way back to the beach, to regroup and plan what to do next, the group comes across two Others/Hostiles who have killed one Dharma settler and are threatening to kill his wife. Sawyer and Juliette intervene, saving the woman, Amy, and killing the Others. At first, she thinks they are also Hostiles, but Sawyer creates a cover story about having survived a shipwreck.
Over the episode, we see that somehow, Sawyer's group has become accepted by and becomes part of the Dharma settlement. How this all happens isn't clear yet, but there are our people: Sawyer, Jin, Jullette and the rest all wearing Dharma clothes, doing Dharma things. Sawyer is Dharma head of security and is known under the name Jim LaFleur (it's Cajun, he says).
And Juliette is working as a mechanic. However, she takes time off the job to deliver Amy's baby (Amy has since remarried--to long-haired, seemingly genial, Dharma leader Horace Goodspeed). The baby and mother both come through ok. It's a boy. Whatever problems with births that occurred later on the island isn't happening yet.
In one flashback, we see Sawyer negotiating with Richard Alpert (who doesn't yet know Sawyer, having not met him yet) over the deaths of the two Others. The Others and Dharma have a truce, but it's been broken, Alpert says. And Dharma needs to make good somehow. This is done by handing over the body of Amy's husband to the Others and telling Alpert where the two dead Others were hastily buried. Alpert's interest in dead bodies isn't explained.
Alpert seems surprised, but not entirely freaked out, when Sawyer says they've met before and describes the visit Locked paid Alpert back in the 1950s.
Over time, we see that Sawyer and Juliette have developed a romantic relationship. But that may be in jeopardy because, at the episode's end, Jin has found Kate, Jack and Hurley--back on the island after three years in their own time stream.
Questions/observations/speculation:
* Why did Alpert want the body of Amy's husband? For Jacob or some other Other entity to inhabit as seems to be the case with Christian Shephard? It's creepy, whatever the case.
* Is Amy's baby anyone we know? Like, perhaps, Desmond? Ethan? Goodwin? Boone? Jacob? Let your imagination run wild!
* Is Horace the father of Amy's baby?
* Why does Dharma ultimately accept Sawyer and the rest into their settlement?
* Sawyer and the rest briefly spot the huge, four-toed statue but don't take a close look. What's it all about?
* Some viewers speculate the statue may the Egyptian god, Horus. The Dharma leader is named Horace as well, could be a clue.
* Also, Amy's husband Paul is wearing an ankh, an Egyptian symbol for life/eternal life, around his neck, which Amy removes before agreeing to hand the body over to Alpert.
* Alpert's heavy eyeliner look is sort of Egyptian. Is he a reincarnated pharoah or something?
* Potential Beatles reference: "Paul is dead." Or is he?
* What's the history of the truce between Dharma and the Others? In the last ep, Widmore told Locke that a war is coming. Are the Oceanic survivors going to be part of a re-do battle between the Others and Dharma, which ultimately led to Dharma being wiped out, thanks to Ben?
* Who's side will everyone be on? Will Locke side with the Others?
* Where are Sun and Frank?
* Daniel catches a glimpse of Charlotte as a young girl at the Dharma settlement. What is his connection to her?
