Lost season 5 episode guide: episode 5.6 "316"

Summary:

The show opens with Jack regaining consciousness in the jungle. He's back on the island! And we soon discover Kate and Hurley are with him.

Through a series of flashbacks, we see how they returned:

Eloise Hawking provides a brief tutorial--with huge swinging pendulum as visual aide--on how the founders of the Dharma Initiative located the island, which apparently is constantly on the move.

She's determined that Ajira Airlines Flight 316 from Los Angeles to Guam will fly over the island at a particular time and the Oceanic 6--or as many of them are available--needs to be on that plane. The success of their return depends on replicating as many circumstances of the original, doomed Oceanic flight as possible.

In a private conversation with Jack, Eloise explains that this replication must also include Locke's body as a stand-in for Jack's dad Christian. And something on Locke's body should belong to Christian. Jack finds an old pair of shoes, which he places on Locke's feet.

As far as we know, only Jack, Sun and Ben plan to make the trip. But, on the night before the flight, Jack finds Kate in his apartment. Something has happened with Aaron. He isn't with her anymore and she won't say what happened. But she now wants to go back to the island too.

And once they arrive at the airport and board the plane, we see that Hurley is also there, as is Sayid, who appears to be in the custody of a female law enforcement officer.

Not only that, but the helicopter pilot from Widmore's freighter, Frank Lapidus, is flying the plane. Some coincidence.

As the flight progresses, the skies become turbulent and there are flashes of lights--just like the ones on the island when time shifts. That's when everyone blacks out and we see that Jack, Kate and Hurley are on the island. Apparently there has been no plane crash. They were just somehow transported there. We don't know about any of the other Losties on the plane.

As Jack, Kate and Hurley get their bearings, suddenly a Dharma hippie bus drives up and out steps Jin, with rifle pointing at them, in full Dharma Initiative regalia. What the...!

Questions/observations/speculation:

* Who is the woman with Sayid on the plane? Is she a cop? Why? What did he do to become her captive?

Photobucket

* Who is the mysterious man sitting amongst the Losties on the plane? He seems to know what's going on.

Photobucket

* How did Hurley end up deciding to make the trip?

* What happened with Aaron? Did Kate have to give him up to somebody else? Will his absence jinx the return-to-the-island trip.

Photobucket

* Locke, as Jeremy Bentham, apparently killed himself. Why? Will he come back to life or reappear as a ghost when back on the island?

* The night before the flight, Ben goes off on some sort of secret mission and comes back looking like he's been beaten to a pulp. Who did he fight with? Widmore? Did Ben kill Widmore? Or try to?

* Are Ben, Sayid and Sun also back on the island? What about Frank?

* Ben is reading James Joyce's "Ulysses" on the plane.

* The Dharma station under the Los Angeles church is named the Lamp Post.

* Here's the military intelligence photo of the island that's posted on the Lamp Station wall:

* Hurley is seen reading a Y The Last Man comic, which is written by "Lost" producer Brian K. Vaughn.
