Lost season 5 episode guide: episode 5.7 "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham"

Summary:

We see Caesar, one of the two previously-unknown-to-us Ajira flight 316 passengers, snooping around in a dark office. There are lots of Dharma Inititative files around. He also finds a sawed-off shotgun, which he stashes in a backpack. It's unclear when/where he is, but then Ilana, the other new-to-us character, walks in and says a man has appeared in the water. He wasn't on their flight.

It soon becomes clear that the plane has crashed. There are all sorts of other survivors around a fire on a beach. And the mysterious man? None other than John Locke. And the beach? It's not Lost island, it's the little Dharma experimental station island near it. Locke learns from Caesar and Ilana that the pilot of the flight, Frank Lepidus, and a woman, presumably Sun, took an outrigger canoe to the larger island. Locke soon figures out what's happened. He was dead, but on the Ajira flight. And now he's back: To life and not quite on the island.

In flashbacks, we learn what happened to Locke after he left the island. Just like Ben, he pops up in Tunisia after spinning the island's time-space wheel. It's a rough trip, especially with his broken leg. But there's a camera positioned in the desert pop-up spot and, hours later, a truck shows up and he's taken to a camp and treated. When he revives, he's visited by Charles Widmore--who recognizes Locke from the island, decades earlier. But, for Locke, that meeting took place only a few days earlier.

Widmore tries to convince Locke that he, not Ben, has the island's best interests at heart. Ben somehow forced Widmore off the island. Widmore says Ben can't be trusted. It's he that wants to help, and he wants to help Locke recruit the Oceanic 6 to return. Widmore arranges for one of his employees, Matthew Abbadon, to travel with Locke. Locke recognizes Abbadon as the orderly who convinced Locke to take the Australian walk-about trip that ultimately led to Locke's crashing on the island the first time around.

In several scenes, we see Locke trying, unsuccessfully to convince the Oceanic 6 to come back to the island with him. He also checks up on Walt, who says he's been having dreams about Locke, dressed in a suit and in danger.

Feeling like he's failed, and having been told by Richard Alpert before leaving the island that he would have to die for the return mission to succeed, Locke decides to hang himself. At the moment he's about to jump off a table to do so, however, Ben arrives at his room and talks Locke out of it. Ben says he will help Locke get the others back to the island. But when Locke mentions going to see Eloise Hawking, Ben's manner changes and he ends up strangling Locke to death, positioning the body to make it look as if Locke did, indeed, kill himself.

Photobucket

We flash back to the present (or whatever) as Caesar shows Locke the injured passengers of Ajira 316. Among them, an unconcious Ben. Locke says "this is the man who killed me."

Photobucket

Questions/observations/speculation:

* So, who the heck do we trust: Widmore or Ben? Or neither? Widmore mentions an upcoming war on the island. Who are the combatants? Will the Others follow Locke?

* If Widmore is such a good guy, how come he sent mercenaries to kill everybody on the island? Seems like both he and Ben are pretty bad.

Photobucket

* How/why was Widmore forced off the island? Was his daughter, Penny, born on the island? Did Widmore leave with her to save Penny's life? Who is Penny's mother? Did she die when giving birth to Penny?

* Did Jacob curse new mothers and babies on the island for some reason? Did Ben convince him to do so?

* Are Caesar and Ilana aware of what's happened to them? Do they know about the island, or are they just along for the ride?

* Do the space/time shifts affect the smaller island as well as the big one? It seems like they must.

* Is Locke truly alive, or is he a ghost? He seems pretty normal for a dead guy.

* Why did Ben switch gears from nice to evil when Locke mentioned Hawking? It seems like he was worried Widmore was a step ahead of him, influencing those who need to go back to the island. But who's side is Hawking on? Ben's? Widmore's? Does she realize they are in opposition? Does she care?

* Why didn't Widmore just go back to the island? Is it somehow impossible for him?

* What about Jacob? Who most represents him: Ben? Widmore? Locke? Is Jacob good?

* Here's a look at the map Caesar comes across in the Dharma office. It's a chart depicting what seems to be different time streams: Both real and imaginary. What does it mean? Is it one of Daniel Faraday's drawings?

Photobucket

* What about Walt's dreams? His visions have a knack for coming true. Who poses a danger to Locke?

* Abaddon tells Locke that it's his job "to get people where they need to go." Obviously, he played a role in getting Locke to go on the fateful Oceanic flight, just as the Australian psychic did with Claire. It seems as if Widmore somehow knew that flight was going to end up on the island and wanted certain people to be on it. Why? And how the heck did he know? Did he somehow sabotage the flight?

Lost season 5 episode 7 preview, Feb. 25: "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham"

Lost season 5 episode guide: episode 5.6 "316"

Summary:

The show opens with Jack regaining consciousness in the jungle. He's back on the island! And we soon discover Kate and Hurley are with him.

Through a series of flashbacks, we see how they returned:

Eloise Hawking provides a brief tutorial--with huge swinging pendulum as visual aide--on how the founders of the Dharma Initiative located the island, which apparently is constantly on the move.

She's determined that Ajira Airlines Flight 316 from Los Angeles to Guam will fly over the island at a particular time and the Oceanic 6--or as many of them are available--needs to be on that plane. The success of their return depends on replicating as many circumstances of the original, doomed Oceanic flight as possible.

In a private conversation with Jack, Eloise explains that this replication must also include Locke's body as a stand-in for Jack's dad Christian. And something on Locke's body should belong to Christian. Jack finds an old pair of shoes, which he places on Locke's feet.

As far as we know, only Jack, Sun and Ben plan to make the trip. But, on the night before the flight, Jack finds Kate in his apartment. Something has happened with Aaron. He isn't with her anymore and she won't say what happened. But she now wants to go back to the island too.

And once they arrive at the airport and board the plane, we see that Hurley is also there, as is Sayid, who appears to be in the custody of a female law enforcement officer.

Photobucket

Not only that, but the helicopter pilot from Widmore's freighter, Frank Lapidus, is flying the plane. Some coincidence.

Photobucket

As the flight progresses, the skies become turbulent and there are flashes of lights--just like the ones on the island when time shifts. That's when everyone blacks out and we see that Jack, Kate and Hurley are on the island. Apparently there has been no plane crash. They were just somehow transported there. We don't know about any of the other Losties on the plane.

As Jack, Kate and Hurley get their bearings, suddenly a Dharma hippie bus drives up and out steps Jin, with rifle pointing at them, in full Dharma Initiative regalia. What the...!

Photobucket

Questions/observations/speculation:

* Who is the woman with Sayid on the plane? Is she a cop? Why? What did he do to become her captive?

Photobucket

* Who is the mysterious man sitting amongst the Losties on the plane? He seems to know what's going on.

Photobucket

* How did Hurley end up deciding to make the trip?

* What happened with Aaron? Did Kate have to give him up to somebody else? Will his absence jinx the return-to-the-island trip.

Photobucket

* Locke, as Jeremy Bentham, apparently killed himself. Why? Will he come back to life or reappear as a ghost when back on the island?

* The night before the flight, Ben goes off on some sort of secret mission and comes back looking like he's been beaten to a pulp. Who did he fight with? Widmore? Did Ben kill Widmore? Or try to?

Photobucket

* Are Ben, Sayid and Sun also back on the island? What about Frank?

* Ben is reading James Joyce's "Ulysses" on the plane.

* The Dharma station under the Los Angeles church is named the Lamp Post.

* Here's the military intelligence photo of the island that's posted on the Lamp Station wall:

Photobucket

* Hurley is seen reading a Y The Last Man comic, which is written by "Lost" producer Brian K. Vaughn.

Lost season 5 episode guide: episode 5.5 "This Place is Death"

Summary:

Sun opts not to shoot Ben because he tells her Jin is alive and that he can prove it to her. Meanwhile, Kate and Sayid say there's no way in heck they're going back to the island. Guilt-ridden Jack, however, is apparently along for the ride.

Ben brings Jack and Sun to a church, where Eloise Hawking is in the midst of calculating how to help the gang make their return trip. At the church they, conveniently enough, run into Desmond. He's there seeking Eloise who, as we figured, is Daniel Faraday's mum.

Photobucket

Meanwhile(s), on said island, Jin realizes that not only is he alive, he's alive in 1988, where he's encountered a young, pregnant Danielle Rosseau and the rest of her French friends. Stranded and wanting to contact the outside world, they have Jin show them to the radio tower. But on the way, they are attacked by the Smoke Monster. One of the party is sucked down in a hole by the monster and before Jin can stop the rest from going down there to rescue him, time shifts a bit to the future. Jin goes back to the beach, where he finds the bodies of two of the Frenchies. He also witnesses Danielle holding her husband at riflepoint. She tells her husband that he's sick, he's changed, and she must kill him in order to protect herself and the, as yet unborn, baby. And that's just what she does.

Photobucket

Then time shifts again and Jin is reunited with Sawyer, Locke, Juliet, Faraday, Charlotte and Miles. This group continues its trip to the Orchid where Locke intends to use the "way back" machine.

Time is shifting like crazy and Charlotte is becoming very ill, having all sorts of hallucinations and talking from different points of her life. Daniel stays with her as the rest go to the Orchid, where Locke descends down a well to the time wheel. Before he reaches the bottom, time shifts again and he's separated from the rest of the group. He's also badly injured his leg.

Alone in the dark, Locke hears footsteps. It's Christian Shepherd (Jacob?), who instructs him how to spin the wheel.

Meanwhile, back up top, Charlotte is dying. She tells Miles that she's been on the island before. She was born there. She tells Daniel she's been trying to find the island all her adult life. It's why she became an archaeologist. Her parents where part of the Dharma Initiative and she and her mother were forced to leave (why we're not told) when she was very young. She doesn't remember her father. But she does remember that before leaving that a man told her she couldn't return. If she did, she would die. This man was Daniel. Her life fades before she can say more.

Photobucket

Questions/observations/speculation:

* Hawking tells Ben that, even though he hasn't managed to bring everyone who needs to go back to the island, she supposes he, Jack, Sun and Desmond "will have to do." Will this be sufficient to stop the problems on the island?

Photobucket

* How exactly is Eloise going to get these folks back?

* Where will Locke end up when he leaves the island?

* Who is Charlotte's father? Seems like maybe it's not Daniel, as many of us had suspected?

* Was Daniel an original part of the Dharma Initiative, or does he somehow end up back in their time? When/how does this occur?

* Daniel's mother is British. He worked at Oxford. Yet he has an American accent. Why?

* Before Locke departs, Christian Shepherd says "say hello to my son." But Locke doesn't learn who the son is. Is Christian referring to Jack? Or to Ben? Or somebody else? And is Christian Christian or is he Jacob in Christian's form? Or a bit of both? My brain hurts.

Photobucket

* Why did the Smoke Monster immediately go after Danielle's crew? What happened to change/sicken them and why wasn't Danielle affected?

* Danielle's husband refers to the monster as a security system for a "temple." What sort of temple is there underground. And is it related to the weird statue Sayid and Sun saw previously and/or to the time wheel?

* Locke got sucked down a hole by the monster a while back. Was he also changed? Can he be trusted?

Photobucket

* Everyone seems to be developing nosebleeds due to the time skips--Sawyer, Miles, Juliette--but not Locke or Daniel. How come?

* And, as ever, can Ben be trusted? Does he have motivations, beyond saving the island, for bringing everyone back? Christian/Jacob hints to Locke that Ben isn't worth trusting. But why was Ben seemingly Jacob's selection as leader of the island, then?

* Why, exactly, is it necessary for Jack, Kate, etc., to go back? What was wrong with them leaving? What will happen when they return?

Lost season 5 preview episode 5 "This Place is Death" Feb. 11, 2009

Lost season 5 episode guide: episode 5.4 "The Little Prince"

Synopsis:

It looks like Ben is getting his back-to-the-island crew together fairly quickly. He finds Jack and the now-revived Sayid at the hospital. He and a reluctant Sayid go to the L.A. County lockup to free Hurley while Jack meets up with Kate, who is freaked by the attorneys who visited her saying that they knew she was lying about being Aaron's mother.

Photobucket

It turns out that those attorneys are actually working for Ben. Evidently, he was using that angle to try to get Kate and Aaron back to the island.

Photobucket

Meanwhile, Sun is making plans to kill Ben. She finds him, Jack and the rest at the Long Beach marina, but we won't know what happens until next week.

Photobucket

Back on the island, there are still time shifts aplenty. Daniel explains to Juliet that he thinks Charlotte's nosebleeds and seizure are due to these shifts. The ill effects of the shifts may be more pronounced on those who have spent the most time on the island. It's hinted that Charlotte was born there, which would explain why she's the worst off. But later Miles (interestingly) and Juliet also develop nosebleeds.

Daniel, Sawyer, Locke, Miles, Juliette and Charlotte experience a series of time changes. They are in the past one moment and Sawyer sees Kate and Claire, at the moment Claire is delivering Aaron. But then things change again. They go to the beach and find that the Oceanic survivors' camp has been destroyed. There are two outrigger canoes on the beach, perhaps belonging to whoever trashed the camp. There is a water bottle from Ajira Airways in one of the boats.

Locke and the rest take one of the boats to circle back around the island so they can get to the Orchid Station. Locke feels that the Orchid holds the key to fixing the time problems. He knows he needs to get off the island and bring back Jack, Kate and the rest.

Photobucket

While paddling the outrigger, the group comes under fire from people in the second canoe. Then time shifts and their attackers vanish. They paddle to the beach but aren't sure where, or when, they are.

The scene changes and we see another craft out at sea: A survival raft carrying some French folks. It's a young, pregnant Danielle Rosseau and her crew. As they also paddle to the island, they see a body on some rocks and pull it onto the raft. It's Jin and he's still alive. When he comes to he's naturally a bit startled to find himself meeting Danielle again for the first time--and this time she's about 20 years younger.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Questions/observations/speculation:

* Who are the outrigger people?

* What's up with the Ajira Airways water bottle? Did another plane crash on the island? There's an ABC-created Ajira Airways Web site here.

* Is Jin stuck back in time with Danielle, or will he eventually shift back to where he belongs?

Photobucket

* Will Sun shoot Ben? I kinda doubt it.

* How will Ben persuade the holdouts--pretty much everyone but Jack--that they need to go back?

Photobucket

* How the heck will they go back?

* Was Miles also born on the island? Some viewers have speculated he's the son of Dr. Marvin Candle (or whatever the heck his name is. We've seen that, indeed, Dr. Marv has a child).

* Is Daniel Charlotte's father? That's also been suspected. He seems to know about her history on the island and has demonstrated deep concern for her that doesn't seem romantic so much as paternal. We've seen earlier that Daniel has been on the island in the past. It's not clear if this was a flash forward, flashback or what. But maybe when he was back in time, he had a romance with a Dharma woman--Charlotte's mother. Maybe?
