Back in civilization, Desmond goes in search of Daniel Faraday's mother. At Oxford, he learns all traces of Faraday and his research are being covered up. He learns of a woman, Theresa--Daniel's girlfriend--who was somehow left in a vegetative state. It's hinted that Daniel's research is somehow responsible. Desmond also learns that Charles Widmore is paying for the medical care of this woman and had funded Daniel's research for several years.
Desmond then visits Widmore, confronting him with this information and demanding to know the location of Faraday's mother. Widmore is reluctant to share the information, but does so because he needs to know from Desmond how Penelope is doing, and that she's safe. He tells Desmond that Faraday's mother is in Los Angeles.
Penny doesn't want Desmond involved in anything having to do with the island, but realizes that she can't stop him from tracking down Faraday's mom.
Back on the island, the remaining survivors learn they've been transported back to the 1950s and that the people who attacked them are the Others, under the leadership of the ever-youthful Richard Alpert.
Also among the Others: Charles Widmore as a young man.
Our time-traveling survivors learn that there's a big hydrogen bomb on the island--evidently placed there by the U.S. military during one of the many atomic experiments of the era. The explosive is nicknamed "Jughead."
The Others aren't too happy about this and have attacked previous military visitors to the island. In fact, they think Locke, Charlotte, Miles and the rest are all involved in the military experiments.
Daniel is adamant that the Others bury the bomb before it's accidentally set off.
Richard doesn't recognize Locke--not technically having met him yet. But he's intrigued by the compass Locke gives him--which future Richard actually gave to Locke--and by Locke's saying he'd been sent by Jacob.
Locke is desperate to learn from Richard how to get off the island, but before he can convince Richard to cough up the details, time shifts again. The Others all disappear along with their camp and Locke, Sawyer, Miles, Daniel, Charlotte and Juliette are all on their own again. Jughead has disappeared, too. Evidently the Others had decided to follow Daniel's advice about burying it.
Charlotte, however, collapses, bleeding from the news. Daniel seems to know what's wrong with her. The time shifts are taking a toll on her health.
Questions/Observations/Speculation:
* The female Other who helps capture the survivors is named Elly. Is this short for Eloise, as in Eloise Hawking--the jewelry store lady who is helping Ben figure out how/when to get back to the island back in Los Angeles?
* And since Eloise is in L.A., is she Faraday's mother? Back in time, on the island, Daniel tells Elly that she "looks so much like" someone he knows.
* And if Eloise is Daniel's mother, who's his dad? Could it be Widmore, just to make the web of connections even more complex?
* Also back in time, Locke says that, in the future, he will be the leaders of the Others. Alpert doubts him, saying that the Others select their leaders when the leaders are quite young. But Locke points out that, since it's 1954, he hasn't even been born yet. Locke was born in 1956. Locke says that Richard should visit Locke in the future, when Locke is a boy. Last season, of course, we see this happening. Alpert turns up to visit the young Locke, but Locke doesn't recognize Richard or any of the items, including the compass, that Richard shows him. This is because, in all the confused time streams, they hadn't actually met yet. Man, this is confusing.
* Who, I ask again, are the Others? When/why/how did they come to the island? What are they doing there? Obviously, they preceded the Dharma Initiative there by around 20 years. At least.
* Again, why doesn't Richard age? How old is he?
* Who/what is Jacob? Richard obviously answers to him.
* What's wrong with Charlotte? It's been hinted that she was born on the island. Are her health problems due to her not being able to be in two places at the same time? There's a possibility that, if time keeps shifting, she could find herself in the same timestream as when she was a girl.
* Is Elly the young Eloise Hawking? And is she Daniel's mother? This seems very likely.
* So Widmore is/was an Other. How/why did he leave the island? And what happened to seperate him from Ben/Alpert's faction?
* Who is Penelope's mother? Was/is she also an Other? Is that why Widmore left the island: so he could have a child? As we've seen, all women who give birth, and their infants, die.
* What happened to Theresa? Was she subjected to the same time-travel brain experiments Faraday tried out on his rats. Perhaps she's not so much brain damaged as perpetually lost in time? Can she be cured?
* Desmond and Penny have a baby son named Charlie. Presumably after the late crash survivor, not Penny's creep dad. Will the boy figure into the story at some point?
