Lost season 5 episode guide: ep. 3, "Jughead"

Synopsis:

Back in civilization, Desmond goes in search of Daniel Faraday's mother. At Oxford, he learns all traces of Faraday and his research are being covered up. He learns of a woman, Theresa--Daniel's girlfriend--who was somehow left in a vegetative state. It's hinted that Daniel's research is somehow responsible. Desmond also learns that Charles Widmore is paying for the medical care of this woman and had funded Daniel's research for several years.

Desmond then visits Widmore, confronting him with this information and demanding to know the location of Faraday's mother. Widmore is reluctant to share the information, but does so because he needs to know from Desmond how Penelope is doing, and that she's safe. He tells Desmond that Faraday's mother is in Los Angeles.

Penny doesn't want Desmond involved in anything having to do with the island, but realizes that she can't stop him from tracking down Faraday's mom.

Back on the island, the remaining survivors learn they've been transported back to the 1950s and that the people who attacked them are the Others, under the leadership of the ever-youthful Richard Alpert.

Also among the Others: Charles Widmore as a young man.

Our time-traveling survivors learn that there's a big hydrogen bomb on the island--evidently placed there by the U.S. military during one of the many atomic experiments of the era. The explosive is nicknamed "Jughead."

The Others aren't too happy about this and have attacked previous military visitors to the island. In fact, they think Locke, Charlotte, Miles and the rest are all involved in the military experiments.

Daniel is adamant that the Others bury the bomb before it's accidentally set off.

Photobucket

Richard doesn't recognize Locke--not technically having met him yet. But he's intrigued by the compass Locke gives him--which future Richard actually gave to Locke--and by Locke's saying he'd been sent by Jacob.

Locke is desperate to learn from Richard how to get off the island, but before he can convince Richard to cough up the details, time shifts again. The Others all disappear along with their camp and Locke, Sawyer, Miles, Daniel, Charlotte and Juliette are all on their own again. Jughead has disappeared, too. Evidently the Others had decided to follow Daniel's advice about burying it.

Charlotte, however, collapses, bleeding from the news. Daniel seems to know what's wrong with her. The time shifts are taking a toll on her health.

Questions/Observations/Speculation:

* The female Other who helps capture the survivors is named Elly. Is this short for Eloise, as in Eloise Hawking--the jewelry store lady who is helping Ben figure out how/when to get back to the island back in Los Angeles?

Photobucket

* And since Eloise is in L.A., is she Faraday's mother? Back in time, on the island, Daniel tells Elly that she "looks so much like" someone he knows.

* And if Eloise is Daniel's mother, who's his dad? Could it be Widmore, just to make the web of connections even more complex?

* Also back in time, Locke says that, in the future, he will be the leaders of the Others. Alpert doubts him, saying that the Others select their leaders when the leaders are quite young. But Locke points out that, since it's 1954, he hasn't even been born yet. Locke was born in 1956. Locke says that Richard should visit Locke in the future, when Locke is a boy. Last season, of course, we see this happening. Alpert turns up to visit the young Locke, but Locke doesn't recognize Richard or any of the items, including the compass, that Richard shows him. This is because, in all the confused time streams, they hadn't actually met yet. Man, this is confusing.

* Who, I ask again, are the Others? When/why/how did they come to the island? What are they doing there? Obviously, they preceded the Dharma Initiative there by around 20 years. At least.

* Again, why doesn't Richard age? How old is he?

* Who/what is Jacob? Richard obviously answers to him.

* What's wrong with Charlotte? It's been hinted that she was born on the island. Are her health problems due to her not being able to be in two places at the same time? There's a possibility that, if time keeps shifting, she could find herself in the same timestream as when she was a girl.

* Is Elly the young Eloise Hawking? And is she Daniel's mother? This seems very likely.

* So Widmore is/was an Other. How/why did he leave the island? And what happened to seperate him from Ben/Alpert's faction?

* Who is Penelope's mother? Was/is she also an Other? Is that why Widmore left the island: so he could have a child? As we've seen, all women who give birth, and their infants, die.

* What happened to Theresa? Was she subjected to the same time-travel brain experiments Faraday tried out on his rats. Perhaps she's not so much brain damaged as perpetually lost in time? Can she be cured?

* Desmond and Penny have a baby son named Charlie. Presumably after the late crash survivor, not Penny's creep dad. Will the boy figure into the story at some point?

Lost season 5 episode guide: ep. 1 and 2, "Because You Left" and "The Lie"

Synopsis:

To use Daniel Faraday the physicist's analogy, time is skipping like a needle on a phonograph record now that Ben has moved the island. Those who remain behind suddenly find themselves in the present, then various pasts, time keeps shifting all the, um, time. Their survival depends on stabilizing the island in one time period, but Daniel isn't quite sure how to do that.

At the episode's start, we see Daniel way back in time--back around the time when the Dharma Initiative first showed up. We see Dr. Marvin Candle (or whatever his name is) filming one of his orientation videos when suddenly there's a panic at the Orchid Station construction site. A huge energy source has been tapped underground and a miner has been injured. Candle knows about the source and says it can be harnessed to travel through time and the workers shouldn't mess with it. Daniel is one of the miners.

Photobucket

Later, we catch up with Locke, who's on his own having been separated from the Others. He's shifting back and forth through time, when he's located by Richard Alpert, who tells him he only has moments to talk. He says that Locke will encounter him again, but in a different time frame. Richard won't remember having met Locke then, but will trust him if Locke gives him a compass, which he hands to Locke before time rapidly shifts again.

Daniel, meanwhile (in the time frame where he's still with the other left behind folk, not disguised as a Dharma worker)visit Hatch-era Desmond. Desmond has no idea who Daniel is, not having met him yet. But Daniel says Desmond will remember this visit when he's off the island. And when that happens, Desmond must go to Oxford University and find Daniel's mother. Sure enough, a little later back in civilization, we see Desmond waking up from a dream, in which he remembers this encounter. He tells Penny he needs to go to Oxford. Stat.

Also back in civilization, Ben has persuaded Jack that everyone who made it off the island needs to go back. The survival of those left behind depends on it. Persuading Sun may be tricky though. We see her meeting with Charles Widmore, saying that they have a mutual desire--to see Ben dead. Later, we see Sun meeting with Kate. Although friendly at first, it's clear that Sun is angry at the other survivors and blames them partially for Jin's death on the freighter.

It'll also be a challenge getting Sayid and Hurley to come along. After helping Hurley escape from the mental hospital--an escapade during which Sayid killed three people--they are wanted by the law. Sayid, knocked out by a tranquilizer dart is secretly brought by Hurley's dad to Jack for treatment, while Hurley is still hiding out in his parents' house. There, Ben tries to persuade him to come along. But Hurley is distrustful, says no way and turns himself in to the LAPD officers staking out the home.

A little earlier, however, we find that Hurley is still seeing dead people, namely Ana Lucia, who tells him it's important not to get caught by the police. He's ignoring her advice, apparently.

Photobucket

Meanwhile, Kate and Aaron are on the run after two "attorneys" arrive at her door demanding she take a blood test to prove she is actually Aaron's mother.

We see, too, that Ben is working with other/Other folks, apparently unbeknown to Jack, who are helping him in the scheme to get the survivors back to the island. One of these people is the jewelry shop lady (previously identified as Mrs. Hawking) that Desmond during one of his post Hatch implosion time/space leaps. It seems like she's figured out where the island is and how to get back there. And one of Ben's other/Other secret cohorts runs a butcher shop and she's kindly agreed to let him stash Lock/Jeremy Bentham's body there, because that needs to go back to the island too.

Photobucket

Back on the island, we see that Charlotte has developed severe headaches and nosebleeds. Daniel seems to know why this is happening, but doesn't explain. The island survivors are trying to get along, as their camp has vanished/hasn't been built yet due to all the time shifts. Suddenly they are attacked by flaming arrows and flee into the trees. Sawyer and Juliet run off on their own and are captured by a group of soldiers who ask "what are you doing on our island?" They threaten to harm Juliet unless Sawyer talks when, suddenly, the soldiers are attacked. By Locke.

Questions/Observations/Speculation:

* Obviously, Ben will manage to get all these folks back to the island, but how? And what, beyond that happening, is his agenda beyond that? No doubt there's a lot of hidden self-interest to his scheme.

* Is what's happening on the island really what was supposed to happen when Ben moved the island? Or did he somehow arrange for this to happen, so he'd be able to go back and resume power?

* Who are the attorneys who visit Kate working for?

* Who are the guys Sayid kills working for?

* How the heck will they get back to the island? How/when does Locke get off it?

* Why is Locke dead?

* Apart from being very confusing (for the characters and viewers), how is all this time shifting dangerous to those on the island and the island itself?

* What's wrong with Charlotte? It's been hinted she was born on the island. Is that the reason for her health problems. We've learned that all babies born on the island, and their mothers, die. Why this is so, we don't know?

* How is Daniel's mother going to help out?

* Is Daniel's mom Mrs. Hawking? Seems feasible.

Photobucket

* What's up with the many named Dr. Marvin Candle/Mark Wickmund, etc., who we now see identified as Pierre Chang?

Photobucket

* Who was shooting arrows at the island survivors? The Others? And who are the soldiers who caught Sawyer and Juliet? Dharma folks? Rosseau's people? Someone else?

* Apparently Richard Alpert's compass is a sort of "constant" that allows him to keep his bearings in time and space. He seems pretty knowledgeable about time travel, too. How so?

Photobucket

* Where are the Others? Are they time shifting too?

* Where's Jacob?

* Cheap Trick's "Dream Police" is playing in the convenience store Hurley visits in order to buy a new shirt when he and Sayid go on the lam. Shortly afterwards, he's pulled over by dead police officer Ana Lucia.

Lost season 5: What we still don't know / unanswered Lost questions

Going into season 5, here are things we still don't know about in "Lost."

* What is the history of the Others? Where did they come from? Why did they kill off the Dharma Initiative?

* What's behind the creepy whispering often heard on the island? Ghosts?

* What are the lists all about? Why are the Others interested in some of the crash survivors and not the rest? They define themselves as "good." What's their definition of the word?

* What was Ben's breakfast on the beach with Kate in season 3 all about? We didn't see any of their discussion.

* Why does the smoke monster kill some people and not others?

* What IS the smoke monster?

* Why did the Others initially disguise themselves as shipwrecked pirate types complete with fake beards?

* What's up with the sickness that killed off Danielle's team?

* What is the history of "Adam and Eve," the skeletal remains the crash survivors discovered in season one? Were they Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan?

* What really brought the various people to island? What's behind the web of connections among them all?

* Is the Dharma Initiative still active at all?

* Who was behind the air drop of Dharma supplies that has benefited the Oceanic survivors?

* Why do women on the island die instead of giving birth?

* What's behind the apparent healing properties of the island?

* Who, or what, is Jacob?

* What's responsible for the visions of animals and dead people the crash surivors sometimes see on the island?

* What's the deal with Libby, killed in season 2, who evidently gave Desmond the sailboat that landed him on the island and who once was in a mental ward with Hurley?

* What's up with the giant, four-toed statue Sayid, Sun and Jin see at the end of season 2?

* Is there any explanation for why the man in the Dharma Initiative videos is at different times identified as Dr. Marvin Candle, Dr. Mark Wickmund, Dr. Pierre Change and other names and why the CIA agent who identifies himself as Joe Inman to Sayid tells Desmond that his name is Kelvin Inman?

* Why did the psychic in Australia encourage Claire to take the doomed flight?

* Who is the man Sarah left Jack for? Why is she so reluctant to reveal his identity? Is he somehow associated with the Dharma Initiative and/or the Others?

* How is the island hidden from the outside world?

* How did Abaddon recruit his team? Why did they agree to help him?

* What's up with that polar bear in Tunisia? Was Charlotte part of Dharma when she found it, or was she snooping into what Dharma is all about?

* How does Ben leave the island?

* What is the explanation for the time anomalies between the island and the rest of the world?

* Why is Richard Alpert seemingly ageless? What is his history?

* Are Christian Shepherd and Claire dead? Are we seeing their ghosts? Is Jacob making their ghosts appear?

* Who is Penelope's mother?

* Why did Alpert want the body of Amy's husband?

* Who created the ancient temple on the island?

* How did the Others save young Ben after he was shot?

THE REMAINING SURVIVORS START TO FEEL THE EFFECTS CAUSED BY
THE ISLAND BEING MOVED, AND JACK AND BEN BEGIN THEIR QUEST TO
REUNITE THE OCEANIC 6 - ALONG WITH LOCKE'S BODY - IN ORDER TO
RETURN TO THE ISLAND, ON THE SEASON PREMIERE OF ABC'S "LOST"

Michelle Rodriguez Guest Stars as Ana Lucia
Awarded the 2005 Emmy and 2006 Golden Globe for Best Drama Series, "Lost" returns for its fifth season of action-packed mystery and adventure -- that will continue to bring out the very best and the very worst in the people who are lost, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Please note: This program will repeat Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9:00-11:00 p.m., ET.

After Oceanic Air flight 815 tore apart in mid-air and crashed on a Pacific island, its survivors were forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive. But they discovered that the island holds many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, housing and hatches with electricity and hot & cold running water, a group of island residents known as "The Others," and a mysterious man named Jacob. The survivors have also found signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock, a downed Beechcraft plane from a failed drug run, the remains of an ancient statue, as well as bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative -- a group of scientific researchers who inhabited the island in the recent past. They also encountered a freighter stationed off the island that some thought would lead to their rescue, but ultimately almost caused their extinction.

With only 34 original hours left until the final episode airs in 2010, Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun and Claire's son, Aaron - otherwise known as the Oceanic 6 - have been rescued and continue to try and pick up the pieces of the lives they knew before the crash and to perpetuate the lie concocted to hide the truth of what really happened. But Jack and Ben must convince all of them to return to the island in order to save those left behind. This will prove quite a feat since Jack is still wrestling with his addictions, Kate won't speak to him, Hurley is in a mental institution, Sayid is an assassin and Sun blames Jack for Jin's death when the freighter exploded. Adding to their worries is the fact that they also have to take the body of Jeremy Bentham - aka Locke -- with them in order to make things right with the island. But locating the island may prove even more difficult since Ben moved it. It's not just a question of where it went, but when. Back on the island, the survivors who were left behind begin to play out the surprising events that inevitably lead to Locke's death.

In the first part of the season premiere, entitled "Because You Left," the remaining island survivors start to feel the effects of the aftermath of moving the island, and Jack and Ben begin their quest to reunite the Oceanic 6 in order to return to the island with Locke's body in an attempt to save their former fellow castaways. In the second part, entitled "The Lie," Hurley and Sayid are on the run from the cops after stumbling into trouble at the safehouse; the island survivors come under attack by unknown forces; and an old friend offers some shocking advice to Kate in order to ensure that "the lie" remain a secret.

"Lost" stars Naveen Andrews as Sayid, Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond, Jeremy Davies as Daniel Faraday, Michael Emerson as Ben, Matthew Fox as Jack, Jorge Garcia as Hurley, Josh Holloway as Sawyer, Yunjin Kim as Sun, Ken Leung as Miles, Evangeline Lilly as Kate, Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet and Terry O'Quinn as Locke.
